Project Spotlight: From Live Action to Comic Book Chaos

I’ve always been fascinated by the raw energy of Mixed Media. For this project, I wanted to push the boundaries of reality by blending live-action footage with a stylized, high-contrast comic book aesthetic.

1. The Concept: "Select Your Character"

The vision was simple but bold: introduce a person as if they were a character in a high-octane video game.

  • Planning: I started with a strict script and storyboard focused on specific poses and silhouettes.

  • Efficiency: Because the pre-production was so detailed, the actual shoot was incredibly fast. The model knew exactly what to do, and we captured everything we needed in record time.

2. The Edit: Building the Foundation

Before the "magic" happened, I had to build a solid foundation.

  • The Assembly: I started with the raw cuts, focusing on rhythm and timing.

  • Color & Speed: I applied color grading and speed ramping to ensure the flow felt dynamic even without the special effects. This resulted in "Version 1"—the clean, edited video.

3. The Transformation: AI & Comic Art

To achieve the "Comic Book" look, I took a hybrid approach:

  • Frame Extraction: I selected key frames from the video and converted them into high-contrast, red-toned art.

  • AI Generation: Using specific prompts, I used AI to transform these frames into stylized comic illustrations, maintaining the model's likeness while adding that gritty, graphic novel vibe.

  • Integration: I brought these AI-generated assets back into After Effects, layering them with motion graphics and digital overlays to create a seamless transition between the "real" world and the "comic" world.

4. Sound Design & Final Delivery

To bring the visuals to life, I layered a rich soundscape:

  • SFX: Camera shutter clicks for the "poses," aggressive transition swishes, and UI sound effects.

  • Music: A high-energy track to tie the "Character Select" theme together.

  • Dual Formats: I produced two final versions—a 9:16 vertical edit optimized for social media and a 16:9 cinematic version for YouTube.
